In celebration of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dragon 2024, Ulysse Nardin has merged this modern timepiece with the mystical elements of Chinese folklore, introducing the Blast Tourbillon Dragon. This timepiece combines the strength and fortune symbolized by the dragon with the purity, wisdom, and wealth represented by the pearl, manifesting in a harmonious blend of power, providence, and prosperity.
The Blast Tourbillon Dragon features a meticulously hand-sculpted dragon in 5N rose gold, which appears to emerge from the movement itself, encircling the skeletonized X structure and protectively holding a mythical pearl atop the flying tourbillon’s cage. This imagery draws inspiration from traditional Chinese symbolism, where dragons with five claws denote imperial authority and prestige. The creation of this three-dimensional dragon, seamlessly integrated within the watch’s design, presented significant challenges, culminating in a two-year development process that included bespoke adjustments to the case, bezel, and crystal. Crafted with extraordinary skill, the rose gold dragon requires four days of artisanal effort, with intricate engraving and the application of gradated colors to bring the mythical creature to life.
The Blast Tourbillon, powered by Calibre UN-172, showcases Ulysse Nardin’s mastery of skeleton tourbillon calibres with automatic winding, featuring a platinum micro-rotor and benefiting from the brand’s pioneering work in silicon fabrication for key movement components.
The watch’s design, combining architectural case construction with avant-garde elements and the use of DLC-blackened titanium paired with rose gold, underscores Ulysse Nardin’s commitment to reinventing haute horlogerie. Ulysse Nardin Blast [Amourex Peintre] Ulysse Nardin, the independent Swiss watch Manufacture celebrated for its bold and unconventional designs, has joined forces with visionary fashion designer Amoureuxpeintre to create the Blast Amoureux Peintre. This limited-edition series of 29 timepieces merges avant-garde watchmaking with minimalist art, pushing the boundaries of design and encouraging introspection. Inspired by frosted glass panes that obscure and reveal simultaneously, the watch invites wearers to uncover hidden meanings and view time from a fresh perspective.
At the heart of this timepiece lies the skeletonized Calibre UN-371, featuring a 96-hour power reserve and a pioneering wide silicon balance wheel borrowed from the Freak Vision. The 42mm sandblasted titanium case and frosted sapphire skeleton dial, achieved through advanced laser and metallization techniques, emphasize simplicity and subtle sophistication. Anthracite hands coated with grey Superluminova and a muted grey Alcantara strap enhance the minimalist look, while the open sapphire case back is engraved with Amoureuxpeintre’s signature.
